Pa. House Majority Leader: Megan's Law Not Affected By State Supreme Court Decision

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - The spokesman for the state House majority leader is assuring Pennsylvanians that the state's Megan's Law is intact despite a state Supreme Court ruling on the issue earlier this week.

The state Supreme Court tossed out a 2004 act that made revisions to Megan's Law, because the bill that was signed into law then also dealt with issues other than Megan's Law, violating the state's constitution's single-subject rule for legislation. The court even stayed its order for 90 days to soften the impact.

But Steve Miskin, spokesman for the House majority leader, says Megan's Law is unaffected because while the ruling dealt with a case involving the 2004 law, Megan's Law was completely overhauled by lawmakers in 2011.

"Literally, we repealed or 'expired' the old Megan's Law, which was what this case was about -- pulled that out -- and just put in an entirely new Megan's Law and updated it."

So the result, Miskin says, is that in spite of the high court ruling, Megan's Law remains fully in effect.
