Pa. Governor Tom Corbett Requests Federal Aid For Irene
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Gov. Tom Corbett has requested federal disaster aid to help the state recover from Hurricane Irene.
Corbett wrote in a letter to the White House that Pennsylvania's roads and infrastructure suffered severe damage in last weekend's storm.
Based on assessments as of Friday afternoon, state officials say Northampton, Sullivan, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties collectively saw more than $32 million in damage.
Assessments continue in counties including Bucks, Delaware, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Pike and Wayne. They can be added later to the governor's request.
If the request is approved, state and local officials and certain nonprofit groups in the affected counties could apply for federal help to pay 75 percent of storm-related costs.
