Pa. Governor Candidate Tom Wolf Says State Should Do More For Philadelphia Schools
By Tim Jimenez
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One day after Governor Corbett was in town to announce an advance of funds for the troubled School District of Philadelphia, his Democratic opponent in the upcoming election, Tom Wolf, made a campaign stop in Northeast Philadelphia.
After a tour of Northeast Building Products, a window and door company on Aramingo Avenue, Wolf, talking to reporters, reiterated his opposition to Corbett's handling of the school funding crisis in the city.
"It still leaves unanswered the question of how do you deliver on the constitutional promise of a quality education for the children of Philadelphia," Wolf said.
Corbett announced a $265-million advance to the school district and called for a vote by legislators on the cigarette tax. Wolf says that's a Band Aid, and he is calling for more state funding.
"I want to go back to what Gov. Rendell tried to do, and that's get to 50 percent, rather than where we are, at 34 percent average funding for public education coming from the state," Wolf said.
A Corbett campaign spokesman says the Corbett administration has increased state spending by "historic levels" and they are still calling on the teachers' union for contract concessions.
