Pa. Game Expert Reminds Area Residents To Give Wildlife Wide Berth
By John Ostapkovich
BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) -- People in several Lower Bucks County communities are on the lookout for a bear seen recently in Hulmeville and Bensalem.
It may seem unusual, but it shouldn't: this is the season for wildlife to be on the move.
From the toads of Upper Roxborough to bears and deer, animals shake off the winter doldrums with a little travel.
"In the springtime, it's pretty typical to encounter wildlife that you're not going to encounter during other times of the year," says spokesman Travis Lau of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. "All wildlife has their young at this time of the year."
Lau says getting the young'uns fed is one reason for a walkabout, although especially for young male bears it can be about finding a new home territory.
And he says if you see such a critter, stay away. Clearly, bears can be dangerous, but even less frightening species deserve a wide berth.
"Oftentimes people wil encounter a fawn, not knowing the mother is nearby, and think that the deer has been abandoned," Lau notes. And coming close, even for the best of reasons, makes matters worse.
