Pa. Education Advocates Begin Statewide Tour To Pitch For Funding
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new push for Pennsylvania school funding is underway. This afternoon, education advocates launched a statewide bus tour -- minus the bus.
The two-week effort by a coalition of unions and community groups called the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools urges legislators to support Governor Wolf's education budget.
"We don't just need a bigger slice of the pie -- we need a bigger pie," says organizer Ron Whitehorne (center of photo, in white shorts), who says the bus tour will visit districts across the state, ending June 29th in Harrisburg.
"We're trying to target some of the Republicans who we think might be movable," he tells KYW Newsradio.
But one thing missing from the Spring Garden School rally kicking off the bus tour: the bus. It turns out it had a fuel leak.
"One doesn't bring a bus to an elementary school dripping gasoline," said Whitehorne with a smile. "That's not the kind of bang we wanted to get the bus tour off to!"
