Pa. Academy of Fine Arts' Student Showcase Shows Array of Media, Styles

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, at Broad and Cherry Streets, is showcasing the work of its students in one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in the country.
Jeffrey Carr, dean of the school of fine arts, says some 1,400 works by 139 students are being exhibited on multiple floors of the Hamilton Building, in the 100 block of North Broad Street.
"This is a place where you can find extraordinarily hip and avant-garde and brand-new art being made right next to some amazingly traditional painters and sculptors," Carr says.
Arcmanoro Nales (below), who is graduating from PAFA, has a number of paintings in the exhibit.
"I just hope someone can look at it and appreciate it for the technical aspects of how it was painted, what it looks like, but also get a feeling from it," he tells KYW Newsradio, "and people who want to look at it and go deeper can get a better understanding of what the painting is doing."

Carr, the PAFA dean, says many of the works by the up-and-coming student artists will be available for sale. And, he says, many of the students have earned prizes, scholarships, and travel awards to recognize their achievement.
