Over 500 Volunteers Helping Philadelphia Residents Rebuild, Improve Homes

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - More than 500 volunteers have joined with residents in West Philadelphia to help fix homes.

Rebuilding Together Philadelphia is a nonprofit organization that helps low-income homeowners in Philadelphia fix their houses.

They are finishing up a four-day project where they worked on 20 houses in the Mantua neighborhood.

"We're working with the home owners to do critical repairs that include energy efficiency upgrades, home modifications for older adults and those with physical disabilities and we are doing safe at home and healthy home projects as well," says Carrie Rathmann, executive director of Rebuilding Together Philadelphia.

She says with this project they are doing more than just home repairs.

"We are also going to reclaim some of the vacant lots and make community green spaces and we'll clean, and we've painted the exterior of 15 of those homes," Rathmann explains.

She says this project costs $100,000.

Rebuilding Together Philadelphia also does work in North Philadelphia, Germantown, Overbrook in the North East and West Philadelphia.
