Outpouring Of Support For Families Of Fallen Firefighters
By Jim Melwert
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Crews are still out at the scene of the fire, but about five minutes up Kensington Avenue at Ladder 10, there is a memorial out front, honoring the two fallen firefighters.
A message on the firehouse's Facebook page reads, "Thank you to everyone for your loving support during this most difficult time."
Heavy hearts here following the deaths of Lieutenant Robert Neary and Daniel Sweeney.
The front of the firehouse for Engine 7, Ladder 10 is draped in black bunting, a memorial out front with flowers, stuffed animals and several candles burning in memory of Neary and Sweeney.
People are stopping by to pay their respects, including Dan Haney. He says his father is a retired police officer and explains why he stopped by this morning, "They're there saving our lives and unfortunately they know this is something (that can happen.)"
A sign at the memorial, nearly hidden by the dozens of flowers, says, "Definition of a firefighter: courage, bravery. Thank you, Ladder 10."
Neighbor Tammy Oslowski says the doors to this firehouse are always open and Neary and Sweeney will be missed.
"They have time to show the kids around. A couple weeks ago, they must have spent 30 minutes with my granddaughter just showing her every piece of equipment."
