Our Eyes Need Special Care in Summertime, Wills Eye Expert Warns
By Lynne Adkins
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Summer sun and fun can pose problems for your eyes.
Sunscreen keeps you from burning and prevents sun damage to the skin. But when applying it, don't forget the area around the eyes, says Dr. Christopher Brady of Wills Eye Institute.
"There's long-term damage that can occur," he tells KYW Newsradio. "Skin cancers on the eyelids can be very common, and the sun can also, over the very long term, be a contributor for cataracts."
Brady also notes that injuries from flying debris when doing yardwork or summertime construction projects are very common, so wear protective goggles.
And swimming can lead to eye infections. Brady says it's more common if you wear contact lenses, so he suggests wearing goggles in the pool or changing to daily disposable lenses in the warm weather.
