Online Petitions Call For Firing Of Penn State University President
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The recent sex scandal allegedly involving Penn State University's former football coach, athletic director and administrator has initiated several online petitions to oust the university's president, Graham Spanier.
On Change.org, a platform for social change, hundreds of people have signed a petition called "Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees: Fire Penn State President Graham Spanier. Some of the petitioners, including former graduates, recite the school's Alma Mater, arguing that anyone who brings shame to the school should immediately be ousted.
On Facebook, users created a page called "Fire Graham Spanier" which had more than 850 "likes" as of Monday evening. Several other Facebook groups and pages were created including "Graham Spanier Should Resign" and "Fire Graham Spanier."
Former coach Jerry Sandusky, 67, of State College, was arrested Saturday and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of a child, indecent assault and unlawful contact with a minor, as well as single counts of aggravated indecent assault and attempted indecent assault, the state attorney general's office said.
Athletic director Tim Curley, 57, and Penn State vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz, 62, both of Boalsburg, surrendered Monday in Harrisburg.
