The city of Philadelphia is a leading job market for the health care industry, with the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Jefferson Hospital and not to mention some of the best teaching hospitals in the country. Philadelphia is a great city for those interested in pursuing a career in health care.
Elizabeth Giordano did just that by getting her nursing degree from Drexel University and working in Philadelphia. Elizabeth is an RN at Atlantic Health System.
Can you describe your duties as a nurse?
"As an RN, I care for patients with all types of medical conditions, but my unit is mainly focused on cardiovascular diseases. It is also a part of my job to make a tough situation for patients and families a little bit easier by advocating for them and helping them feel confident in the care their family member is receiving during their hospitalization."
How has education prepared you for your career as a nurse?
"Prior to attending Drexel University, I attended an amazing nursing program that taught me, not only the skills required to be a nurse, but also how to think critically to help my patients. Continuing my education at Drexel University Online has only helped me improve and expand on my knowledge in the nursing field."
What continuing education is required for your role?
"Over the past few years, there has been a push for all Registered Nurses to obtain at least a Bachelor's of Science in nursing. Registered Nurses without bachelor's degrees are encouraged to continue their education within at least 5-10 years of getting their RN."
Do you have any advice for someone pursuing a career in nursing?
"My advice for anyone considering going back to school is just to go for it. The easiest thing to do is to make excuses as to why it is something that cannot be done. Many hospitals provide partnerships with different universities and tuition reimbursement to help make education affordable. Take the time to find the best program for you. It is also best to really consider how you learn. For myself, I know that online classes were my best option with my extremely busy work schedule. Find a program that will cater to your specific learning needs so that continuing your education does not become more of a hassle than an excellent opportunity that not everyone is privileged enough to receive."
