One Philadelphia Alternative School To Serve As Model For National Non-Profit
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia alternative high school has caught the eye of a national non-profit.
Mayor Nutter toured the classrooms of Excel Academy South on the grounds of Friends Hospital on Roosevelt Boulevard. It's an alternative high school that gives a second chance to students who drop out of school.
Marlene Seltzer, CEO of the national nonprofit "Jobs for the Future," says her organization chose Excel South as a laboratory for other district leaders and teachers to visit.
"We'll use this school as a national model of what can be for young people that have dropped-out and/or are now reengaging in their education," Seltzer says.
Mayor Nutter pointed out that two-thirds of the students at Excel advanced two or more grade levels in a single year.
