One NJ Medical Marijuana Provider Ready To Give Up On Much-Delayed Program
By David Madden
MONTCLAIR, N.J. (CBS) -- It's been more than two years since New Jersey adopted a medical marijuana law, yet the plan has yet to issue its first dose to anyone.
And now, one of the six nonprofit firms trying to set up shop in New Jersey could soon pull out of the program altogether.
The Greenleaf Compassion Center, in Montclair, is actually further along than anyone else, with the town having approved a growing site. It's set up and ready to go.
Greenleaf CEO Joe Stevens expected to be in business this past January, only to see that date pushed back to July by the state.
Now, that date has been put off indefinitely, and Stevens has had enough.
"Our organization has been misled twice now by the Department of Health and Senior Services," he tells KYW Newsradio, "so I really have no faith in the department anymore."
He says he's not quite sure who is responsible for the delays, but says at this point that doesn't much matter.
Stevens is trying to convince his board to simply shut down since they are, after all, a nonprofit. In the meantime, they are seeking donations to make ends meet.
Donations are being taken by mail at Greenleaf Compassion Center, PO Box 1208, Montclair NJ 07042.
