Old Is New When It Comes To Phillies Fashion

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Opening Day, the moment Phillies fans have been impatiently waiting for, is today. Citizens Bank Park will be packed, and most fans in attendance will be sporting some sort of Phillies fashion, which has a long and rich history.

Sean McKinney with Mitchell and Ness says his store specializes in authentic, vintage-inspired sportswear.

"I would say the most unique item we have is the wool flannel jerseys, specifically the Richie Ashburn that was worn back in the early 1900's. Up until 1969, 1970, all the teams wore wool flannel jerseys."

McKinney says uniform materials have evolved from wool to a lighter poly-knit blend over the years, "the Pittsburgh Pirates were the first team to actually make that change and that was in 1970."

There are also some one-of-a-kind jerseys on display.

"We have a few authentic game worn pieces behind glass cases that are not for sale, but they're for display only and some go back to about 1938."

He says lately, there's been a resurgence of interest in baseball vintage clothing.

"It used to be a very short term baseball business for us, but over the past 2-3 years, we've seen the Phillies interest and demand pretty much all 12 months of the year."
