Officials In Gloucester County Allow Residents To Get Rid Of Unused Tires And Fight Mosquito Population

GLOUCESTER COUNTY, NJ (CBS) -- It's still winter, but Gloucester County officials are again looking ahead and working to deny mosquitoes a popular breeding ground.
Summer brings mosquitoes and one place they often breed is the standing water in old, unused tires.
So again this year, Gloucester County is allowing residents to drop off old tires from pickups and personal vehicles.
Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert Damminger says,"They're shredded up and instead of being into the stream, they're used for construction projects within the solid waste facility. I think they make bases and berms."
Tire drop off is at the county's solid waste facility Monday through Friday, from 830 a.m. until 3 p.m., then again on Saturday, March 21st.
Damminger says the landfill cannot handle commercial tires; they're too cumbersome and just too heavy.
