Drug Convict That Escaped Facility In NJ Captured In Philadelphia

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS/AP) — Authorities say they captured in Philadelphia a man convicted on drug charges who escaped from a South Jersey prison Saturday morning.

Department of Corrections officials say they, along with Philadelphia police, arrested Panagioti Souris around 4 p.m. at 6th and Market streets. He surrendered without a struggle.

Officials say Souris is being held pending an extradition hearing and is expected to be charged with escape.

Officials noticed that Souris was missing from the Ancora facility of Bayside State Prison Saturday around 6 a.m.

Souris was serving a maximum sentence of five years on two heroin charges. He was a minimum-custody convict, officials say.

State records show Souris entered the facility in April and would have been eligible for parole in December 2016.

Officials say escape charges could add three to five years on his sentence.
