2 Officers Injured In Gloucester Township While Apprehending Alleged Camden Car Thief
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) - Two Gloucester Township officers were injured Saturday morning while trying to arrest an alleged car thief from Camden, New Jersey.
At about 3:30 a.m., Gloucester Township Police responded to the area near Black Horse Pike and the Old Black Horse Pike to assist Haddon Heights Police who discovered a male driving a van reported stolen from Camden.
According to authorities, the driver, who police have identified as 25-year-old Hector Aviles, failed to stop for police, crashed into the garage of a home along Old Black Horse Pike, and then fled the scene on foot. Officers from the Gloucester Township Police Department and officers from other police units surrounded the scene.
During the search, two Gloucester Township policemen found the suspect hiding in bushes and attempted to apprehend the suspect. The suspect resisted arrest and fought with officers before finally being secured in handcuffs, authorities said.
Both of the officers sustained physical injuries which required emergency medical treatment at a local hospital. Both officers have been released from the hospital pending follow-up examinations and treatment for their injuries. One of these officers is suffering from a possible broken bone in his knee, as a result of the intense fight with the suspect.
The suspect, who police have identified as 25-year-old Hector Aviles of Camden was charged in Gloucester Township with two counts of Aggravated Assault on Police, 1 count of Resisting Arrest and Possession of Burglary Tools. Aviles was remanded to the Camden County Jail. Additional charges are pending as a result of the pursuit and theft involving the Haddon Heights Police Department and the Camden Police Department.
