Offer To Scrutinize Your Electric Bill May Be Scam, Or Just Free Enterprise

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- You might think it's a scam, but it could just be people trying to save you money on your electric bill.

If you've heard stories about people coming to the door asking to take a look at your Peco bills, it may not be a scam.

"If someone comes to your home or business asking to see your Peco bill, it is most likely that this is a supplier looking for an opportunity for the customer to switch to their business and save money on the bill," notes Peco spokesman Ben Armstrong.

Nevertheless, he says, first check the credentials of anyone coming to your door before you turn over any personal information of any kind.

Armstrong says that Peco customers in Pennsylvania can switch suppliers on the "commodity" portion of their bill, potentially saving some money.

Peco supports the "electricity choice" program, since it allows the utility to offload some of its demand rather than having to build additional generating capacity.
