Off-Duty Philadelphia Officer Catches Suspect In Fatal Shooting In North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia police say an off-duty officer is okay after a gunman shot at the officer inside a local bar on Germantown Avenue across the street from Temple University Hospital.
Authorities say 22-year-old Raheem Rose of Philadelphia was pronounced dead just after 6 a.m. Sunday. Police say Rose shot at two people while he was inside the Myspace Lounge in North Philadelphia. The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. One of the two people Rose allegedly shot and killed is 25-year-old Michael Jones.
Police say Rose also shot a 26-year-old male who is now in critical condition. When Rose tried to leave the bar, police say an off-duty officer, who witnessed the shootings, fired shots at Rose after Rose fired at the off-duty officer.
The officer shot the suspect who later died Sunday morning at Temple University Hospital. Police say Internal Affairs is investigating the shooting. Officials have not released the name of the off-duty officer.
Eyewitness News was first to speak with the bar owners, Ray Jenkins and Clark Richard. Both men called the off-duty officer a hero. They say they grew up with the officer. They also say it was coincidence that the officer was there that night because there normally isn't a police presence at their bar.
The owners say earlier that day, before the shooting occurred, they had just wrapped up a fundraising event for a woman in the neighborhood who is on the verge of losing her home. "It's a real shame, we've been here three years and we've never had a shooting," said Richard. "I just feel bad for the families of the victims."
