NY Writer Says Andy Reid Would Have Traded Vick Instead Of McNabb
By Spike Eskin
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – As we wade our way through the year Philadelphia Eagles quarterback controversy, the decision most people are debating is whether or not to bench Michael Vick in favor of rookie Nick Foles. As it turns out, if Vick had more trade value a couple of years ago, the 2012 version of this debate may still include the name Donovan McNabb.
"[Andy Reid] did tell me in that interview---now this was right after they traded McNabb to Washington---he told me, if the best offer he got was for Vick, he would have traded Vick," New York Daily News writer Gary Myers told 94WIP's Angelo Cataldi and the WIP Morning Show on Thursday.
Myers interviewed Andy Reid for his new book, Coaching Confidential, set to be released in November. Myers interviewed over 20 coaches for the book, including Reid, Tom Coughlin, Bill Parcells and Jimmy Johnson.
"And I said [to Reid],' you're telling me after the public relations hit you guys took in Philly, the damage control you had to do after you signed Vick (he's only been here for a year at that point). I mean you did all the dirty with Michael Vick, you made it easier for any team to then trade for him because you know, the funeral had sort of died down at the point.' I said, 'you would have been willing to just give him up after a year, after what you have invested in him?' And he said, if that was the best offer then he would have traded him then. At that point, he would have signed McNabb and Kevin Kolb."
Michael Vick hasn't played well this year, with a quarterback rating that ranks 29th overall in the league. "Unless Vick continues on this downward path, and he becomes the ultimate reason why they are losing games, I can't see Andy benching Vick," Myers said. "And I'm not really sure why he would even insinuate that, because all that does is cause problems."
