Nutter Rejects Trash Collection Rebate For Philadelphia Condo Owners

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mayor Nutter has nixed a bill that would have given tax rebates to condo residents because they don't use city tax collection.
Mayor Nutter is exercising a pocket veto on the condo trash bill: he simply won't act on it, and because council has no further sessions this year, the measure dies.
The sponsor of the bill, Councilman Jim Kenney isn't surprised.
"He believes it's too expensive. I believe it's an issue of fairness."
Kenney's plan would have given each resident of a condo that doesn't use city trash collectors a $200 a year rebate on property taxes to reimburse them for private collections.
"One of the basic city services is trash collection," Kenney says "And if you live in a condo, and you pay real estate taxes like a rowhouse resident, you shouldn't be denied that particular service."
Aides to the mayor point out no condo is denied trash collection, and those which opt out do so by choice.
