Nutter Open To Clarke Plan For More Ads On City Properties

By Mike Dunn

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mayor Nutter says he is open to looking at a proposal from the new City Council President Darrell Clarke about boosting revenue with ads on city buildings.

Council President Clarke, in his swearing-in address, promoted his plan to boost the amount of advertising on city properties.

"I'm not saying that we should put a billboard on top of Billy Penn's hat. But if we work together, we can realize revenues to help pay for essential services, while still preserving the character of our public spaces," Clarke said.

Nutter was later questioned about whether he is on board.

"Obviously we have advertising now on city bus shelters. I know the council president was not talking about some of the things he alluded to. But it's certainly an idea worth having a discussion about," Nutter said.

Clarke believes extending advertising on city properties could raise as much as $10 million dollars a year.
