Nutter Leads Session On Violence Crisis In Cities At U.S. Conference Of Mayor's In Las Vegas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter was in Las Vegas over the weekend for the 81st Annual U.S. Conference of Mayors. On Sunday, Nutter was moderating a panel on the violence crisis in cities and the national call to action to stop it.
Mayor Nutter is also the President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and says the session is the result of a partnership of mayors called 'Cities United,' which includes New Orleans Mayor Mitchell Landrieu.
He says it will focus in on boys and men of color and violence in cities across the country, as well as the toll that it takes on communities.
"Certainly in Philadelphia we've had some success, but still too much violence," Nutter says. "New Orleans the same. Mayors deal with this issue all across the country."
The mayor says the goal is to share best practices, including a resolution demanding gun control legislation.
"We have to redouble our efforts," says Nutter. "The American people, their voices need to be heard. They need to be in touch with their members of Congress to make sure action is taken."
Vice President Joe Biden told the mayors on Friday that a renewed push for gun owner background checks is in the works.
"It certainly reaffirmed his strong support and the president's strong support for safety measures," Nutter says.
The annual conference included Mayors from roughly 200 cities across the nation.
