Nutter Hoping To Reverse City Council's Revisions of New Zoning Code Law
By Mike Dunn
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter says he's not throwing in the towel after City Council overrode one of his vetoes and made big changes to the city's new zoning code (see related story).
Mayor Nutter last Thursday had vetoed Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell's bill to revise a portion of the new zoning code. The changes involved when and how community groups get notified about a proposed new development in their area.
Blackwell said her changes will ensure that groups won't lose their voice on such matters, and Council overrode Nutter's veto.
The mayor now says he's not giving up.
"The bill doesn't go into effect for sixty days," he noted today. "I think, increasingly, Council members will see that it was not the path to go. And I am hopeful that between now and then, new legislation will be introduced."
Nutter believes that Blackwell's notification provisions would prove a major hindrance to new development (see previous story).
