Former Mayor Nutter Honored With Theatre Dedication

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A state-of-the-art theatre was dedicated to former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter during a gala Wednesday evening.

'Spectacular' is how Nutter describes the multi-purpose facility within the Pennsylvania Convention Center, that will be used for a variety of events.

"Whether it's movies, lecture series, meetings, political debates or anything like that, it's a quite unique space in Philadelphia," Nutter explains.

He says he has always had an appreciation for theatre...

"As I was growing up I loved going to the movie theatre. As a younger man I actually had thoughts of owning one at some point, but this is probably about as close as I'm going to get to that."

But he was still surprised by this honor:

"I had no idea it is what it is. I thought there was just a room and I was getting a plaque. This is a little different than that."

Very different, indeed. The 600-seat Michael A. Nutter Theatre features G4 film screen, 4K cinema projector and 7.1 surround sound.

"The projector, the sound, the screen, the sight lines, everything, it's fantastic," Nutter tells KYW Newsradio.

Already announced is a film highlighting the Pope's visit to Philadelphia, that will be shown at the Nutter theatre in October of this year.
