Nutter Hints That Nation's Mayors Will Increase Fight For Gun Control

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Following three fatal New Year's Day shootings in Philadelphia (see related story), Mayor Michael Nutter today was indicating that he'll unveil a new gun-related initiative soon -- though he's mum on details.
Spurred by both last month's Newtown, Conn., tragedy (see related stories) and three fatal New Year's Day shootings in Philadelphia, Mayor Nutter hints that he is preparing a new effort to stem gun violence.
"You will hear from us very soon about additional efforts to deal with this issue, from my perspective at the city, state, and the federal level -- in my capacity as president of the US Conference of Mayors," Nutter said today.
When asked if those additional efforts relate specifically to Philadelphia, Nutter said he's not in a position now to get into any details.
As to whether an announcement will come this month, Nutter would only say "very soon."
Nutter and Philadelphia City Council have tried in the past to put forth Philadelphia-only gun laws, only to have those efforts challenged in court by the NRA and others.
