Northern Liberties Residents Await Completed Grocery Store At 2nd And Girard
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia's Northern Liberties community was expected to have a supermarket by now in the Piazza at 2nd and Girard, but that space is still empty.
The signs say Pathmark, but Northern Liberties residents say there's still no grocery store in their growing community.
"The sign's been up there! The sign is there, it's just not here!"
"People are talking, we were definitely expecting it."
Developer Bart Blatstein filed a motion in bankruptcy court last month, asking Pathmark, who filed for Chapter 11 last winter, to make a decision about their upcoming lease.
"Well, I'd like them to leave. There are a number of other operators that would love to be there," Blatstein said.
A statement from a Pathmark spokesperson indicates A&P plans to submit a reply to Blatstein's motion. Meanwhile, Blatstein says he's confident Northern Liberties will have a supermarket this summer, Pathmark or not.
"I couldn't tell you what name's gonna be on it, but a supermarket will be open."
Residents are counting on it.
"We need something that's walkable instead of us having to drive everywhere and then come home and there not be any parking."
