Northern Liberties Landmark Celebrates 120 Years
Philadelphia (CBS) – An historic church is celebrating its 120th anniversary in Northern Liberties with special services all day, honoring the church's long standing commitment to the community.
Saint Paul's Baptist Church was founded around 8th and Girard in 1890 and then took over the imposing stone building at 10th and Wallace. A community center was built next door in the 1970's where there are a number of programs for young people, seniors, the homeless and the hungry.
The church's fifth pastor is Reverend Dr. Leslie Callahan (photo):
"One of the things I hope for our congregation moving forward is that we'll really have an impact and to be able to reach people who are un-churched, who've never had a faith community, and who want to try it out and learn about it."
Proceeds from Sunday's special homecoming concert at the church will go to Philabundance and Saint Paul's Haiti Relief Ministry.
