North Philly Blackhawks, Frankford Chargers Head To Football Tournament In Orlando
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Two local Pop Warner football teams headed to Orlando on Saturday to compete in a national championship, thanks to some local firms which are picking up the tab.
News reports this week highlighted the plight of the North Philly Blackhawks and the Frankford Chargers, two local Pop Warner champions, who were invited to a week-long national tournament in Orlando but without the money to get there.
Learning of the situation, Mayor Nutter worked the phones, "One thing we always need to remember is that if we ask, more times than not, people will actually say yes."
Six local firms, including the Eagles and CBS-Philly, said yes with donations totaling more than $26,000 - enough for both teams to make the trip.
"We are able to tell our kids that we're going." said Derrick Williams, coach of the Blackhawks. "It's not about the money anymore. It's strictly about football, going down there and taking care of business, trying to be the best team in the country at our weight class."
