Non-Profit Organizations Participate In Service On Independence Mall To Remember 9/11 Victims
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In 2009, September 11th was declared "National Day of Service and Remembrance" as a way to encourage Americans to volunteer for a good cause.
On Independence Mall, 100 non-profit organizations were on hand looking for volunteers and encouraging people to participate in service as a productive and respectful way to remember 9-11.
Todd Bernstein is the president of Global Citizen.
"There were a number of people throughout the country who started seeing this as an opportunity to give back and volunteer several years ago and it became codified as a national day of not just reflecting and remembering about the victims, the families, first responders, but also an opportunity to turn concerns about the community into citizen action."
Among the participating organizations were PAWS, Back on My Feet and the Red Cross.
