No 'Tipsy Tow' Again For Philadelphia Region This New Year's Eve
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's another New Year's Eve without "Tipsy Tow" for those in the Philadelphia area.
The AAA-run service, which offers a free tow home for drivers who have been drinking on holidays like New Year's Eve, started a few years ago in certain cities, but still hasn't made its way to the Delaware Valley.
To use the service, drivers simply call a toll-free number and tell an AAA operator, "I need a Tipsy Tow," and a truck is sent to the driver's location. Tows of up to five miles are free.
Right now, the program is available only in certain areas. The New Year's service is, sadly, limited to northern California, Nevada and Utah.
Until the service makes its way east, AAA is reminding drivers that New Year's consistently ranks as the deadliest day for alcohol-related fatalities on the roads. In Pennsylvania in 2011, 41% of holiday weekend traffic deaths were related to alcohol use, compared to a 33% share of the total traffic deaths for the full year.
