No Big Surprises On 2013's List Of Most Popular Names
By Paul Kurtz
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - What are parents naming their newborns these days?
There are no big surprises on this year's Social Security Administration list of most popular names, at least when you glance at the top five.
Jacob is again the most popular boy name, followed by Mason, Ethan, Noah and William.
On the girls side, the winner for the second year in a row is Sophia.
KYW Newsradio reporter Paul Kurtz quickly found several Sophia's during a stroll along Independence Mall as well as a lot of girls who were way down on the list, including: Celeste, Laya, Kayla Lynne, Brooklyn, Tilan and Reilly.
Reporter: "What's your name?"
"Zoey," said one girl, who has two top five sisters Sophia and Isabella.
Reporter: "Oh, you didn't make the list, your sisters did. Do you feel bad about that?"
Zoey: "No, they're horrible sisters."
Isabella is number three, just behind Emma and ahead of Olivia and Ava.
There are some obscure, low-ranking names that are on the move.
Major jumped 505 spots, to No. 483 and Messiah zoomed up to number 387 from 633.
