NJ Transit Requests Samsung Galaxy Note7 Users 'Turn It Off'
NEWARK, N.J. (CBS) - Samsung officials continue urging anyone who owns their latest phone to stop using it and return it after recent reports of batteries exploding.
New Jersey Transit is doing the same thing.
If you own a Samsung Galaxy Note7, NJ Transit officials have a simple request...
"Not to use or charge the mobile device on board trains, buses, light rail vehicles, or in our stations and facilities," says NJ Transit's Jim Smith .
Smith says the request comes after recent safety concerns associated with the phone:
"Samsung Galazy Note7 has been the subject of numerous accounts of batteries bursting into flames, becoming a fire hazard."
He says there won't be any punishments for failure to obey, but...
"Just urging our customers to do the responsible thing themselves, and to heed the manufacturers advice, to heed the warnings from the United States consumer product safety commission and to simply power down the Galaxy Note7. This is especially critical when riding a transit system along with hundreds of thousands of others. "
This isn't the first time NJ Transit has done something like this.
"There was a restriction placed on using, charging, storing or transporting hoverboards following similar fire safety concerns," Smith says.
He says this is all precaution. NJ Transit has no reported cases of the phone catching fire.
