NJ Transit Reaches Deal To Avoid Strike
NEW JERSEY (CBS) --There will be no strike involving New Jersey Transit workers.
The agency and its rail workers have reached a tentative deal to avoid a strike, which would have affected the estimated 160,000-commuters who use NJ Transit on a typical weekday.
Workers had threatened to walk off the job at 12:01 a.m. Sunday if no deal had been agreed upon, but now that won't be the case as the deal runs through 2019. Governor Chris Christie says it's good news on many different levels.
"First - we avert a strike and the damage it would do to our economy, and we've reached an agreement that lasts longer than the presidential executive board recommendation," he said.
The Governor applauded the deal.
"This agreement has come after long and hard negotiations and compromises on both sides."
Exact details of the new contract were not made available, but Christie says compromises were made by both sides.
