NJ Township To Keep Traffic Lights On If Power Goes Out During Winter Storm
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS) -- Governments throughout the region are bracing for this weekend's blizzard. One South Jersey town has developed unique plans to address storm needs.
Even as Gloucester Township, Camden County officials urge residents to stay off the roads, they're ready for those who don't.
Twenty traffic lights at major intersections are now equipped with transfer switches. They'll come in handy in the event the power goes out.
Township Mayor David Mayer says, "It allows public works to come to that intersection and to simply plug in a generator which will provide electricity for that traffic light."
The township is also ready with a portable charging station for cell phones, which will be deployed as needed.
The township building will also be opened for use as a warming location should there be a major power failure.
