NJ: Sued Sandy Charity Must Shut Down
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A purported Superstorm Sandy charity sued by New Jersey authorities has been ordered to distribute its donations and then shut the operation down.
Acting Attorney General John Hoffman announced Friday that the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation and operators John Sandberg and Christina Terraccino have been ordered to turn over the operation to a court-appointed administrator. The administrator will distribute the more than $300,000 already received and then dissolve the operation.
New Jersey sued 31-year-old Sandberg and 27-year-old Terraccino in February for allegedly using donated funds for personal use and failing to properly register as a charity.
The Sparta residents are accused of transferring more than $13,000 in donations into personal accounts and paying $8,000 to a credit card company for personal expenses.
They are now barred from running Sandy-affiliated charities.
