NJ Seeks Disaster Aid After January Storm And Shore Flooding
TRENTON, N.J., (CBS) -- Two and a half weeks after a winter storm hit the tri-state area, along with serious tidal flooding down the shore, New Jersey has formally requested federal aid for 17 hard hit counties. In South Jersey, all but Gloucester and Salem Counties spent enough money to meet the federal criteria for possible help. The request for $82.6 million is meant to cover government costs in dealing with snow removal and debris cleanup on the state and county level.
Financial thresholds set to request aid for individuals were not met anywhere in the state. Governor Chris Christie's letter to the White House notes that a dozen counties tied or broke two day snowfall records. And 60 mile per hour winds, paired with tidal and storm surges, left beaches in sad shape.
