NJ Police Safely Disarm Armed Suspect
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- Police officers in southern New Jersey have safely disarmed a despondent man who had pointed a steak knife at them.
The Gloucester Township officers had gone to the 62-year-old man's unit in the Autumn Ridge apartment complex around 1:20 a.m. Thursday after someone reported he had swallowed an unknown amount of pills.
After briefly talking with the man, he took out a concealed knife and initially pointed it at himself before pointing it at the officers.
One officer then used his expandable police baton to disarm the man, who was then subdued without incident. He's been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and weapons offenses.
Authorities would not release the man's name, saying only that he was taken to a hospital for observation.
