NJ Officials Say Roads Are Ready For Shore Traffic
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - Last weekend, New Jersey governor Chris Christie was telling people to stay away from the shore with Hurricane Irene battering the East coast. Now, the welcome mat is back out just in time for Labor Day weekend.
For all the damage, all the flooding left in the wake of Irene, you'd think your drive would be more of a challenge than usual. Think again.
At this point, there's just one highway with a problem, according to Tim Greeley with New Jersey's Department of Transportation.
"Continued flooding reported on route 40 in Hamilton, Atlantic County and there are alternatives right there in that same vicinity. Route 322, Route 30 or the Atlantic City Expressway can all be used to head east."
Hopes are to have that problem cleared by Friday afternoon, if not sooner. State crews, along with private contractors, have been working 'round the clock to deal with problems on major roads throughout the state.
There were 670 road closures on Sunday, just under two dozen remain, most are in North jersey.
