NJ Legislature Ends Session With Late-Night Flurry of New Measures
By David Madden
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) -- Just hours before a new legislature was taking office today in New Jersey, state legislators wrapped up the old session late last night by approving a long list of proposals that are now subject to action by Governor Chris Christie.
Among the measures sent to the governor...
The cities of Camden, Trenton, and Newark may see the creation of so-called "alternative" schools in an attempt to improve student performance. Nonprofit operators would receive 95 percent of the funding for each student they take in.
Christie is also being asked to okay a plan to eliminate New Jersey's three-day waiting period to get a wedding license, give school boards the option to move their elections from April to November, and a pilot program to allow bets on horse races at a dozen bars across the state.
The plan to allow sports betting at Atlantic City casinos is also on Christie's desk, and approval there would move the battle to lift a federal ban to the courts and Congress.
