NJ Legislator Brings Attention To Legislation That Aims To Bridge Gender Wage Gap

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A New Jersey legislator is bringing attention to the gender wage gap in his state and across the country.

Representative Donald Norcross, congressman for NJ's 1st congressional district, visited with the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey to talk about The Paycheck Fairness Act.

"The Paycheck Fairness Act is the second generation of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act which talked about making sure that women are paid the equal amount that men are paid when they're doing the same job," said Norcross.

He describes the gender income gap.

"For every dollar that a man makes, a woman makes 79 cents and it gets worse when we start looking at African American women. They make 69 cents to every dollar. Latinas, 67 cents!"

He says this is a particularly important issue as we approach national elections.

"It's a matter of making sure that this comes in as part of the discussion when we're choosing the next leader of our country," said Norcross.
