ON THIS DAY LAST YEAR: In Stockholm, Jack Johnson scored a power-play goal at 4:08 of overtime as the eventual Stanley Cup-champion Los Angeles Kings opened the regular season with a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers. In Helsinki, Thomas Vanek scored two power-play goals in leading the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks. The two games were part of a four-game NHL regular-season opening European tour.
