Newsweek Magazine To End Its Print Run, Will Go Digital
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's a big change in traditional journalism: Newsweek magazine has announced that it will stop publishing a print edition, and will go all-digital next year.
Editor-in-chief Tina Brown says that after 80 years in print, Newsweek has reached a tipping point where it can most efficiently reach its readers in an all-digital format.
Christopher Harper, a Temple University journalism professor and former Newsweek reporter, says it's a sad day to hear what once was a leading publication essentially give up.
"Newsweek has failed to adapt, as many printed editions have failed to adapt, to digital technology," he tells KYW Newsradio. "And I think that the switch is just going to lead to the inevitable death of Newsweek magazine."
Harper says the public's appetite is increasingly for instant digital delivery of news, instead of an insightful analysis in print of the events of the last week.
