Newly Expanded Animal Shelter Opens In Camco

BLACKWOOD, N.J. (CBS) -- Camden County this week took the wraps off a 1.5 million dollar expansion to its animal shelter.
The move means the shelter can house an additional 30 dogs and 50 cats. Not only that, but they'll have more room to play and get to know their potential new owners a little better.
"When they come in to look at the dogs and the cats before leaving with one, they get to go into a greeting room where we'll actually sit down with them," Camden County Freeholder Michelle Gentek-Mayer told KYW Newsradio. "They get to see if a pet is a good fit for them."
The addition is also better for the animals, and hopes are it'll shorten their stay at the shelter. "We want to give our animals more of a home than a feeling of just being in the cage," she said. " So we want to give them the proper home and be respectful to them until they're adopted into a loving family."
The project was part of the county's capital plan. That should be viewed as a commitment, at least from Gentek-Mayer's point of view, that Camden County's public policy is in line with the moral views and values of its residents.
