New West Philadelphia Mural Pays Tribute To Women Of Education
BRYN MAWR, Pa. (CBS) - A spectacular mural has been dedicated in West Philadelphia as a tribute to advances in the education of women. This is part of the 125th anniversary of Bryn Mawr College.
The mural covers the entire front wall of the District Health Center 4, on Haverford Avenue near 44th Street. Going through the alphabet, it pays tribute to women, local, national, international, past and present, who have made a difference advancing the lives of other women and promoting education.
The mural includes Michelle Obama and Lisa Nutter, but also lesser known women such as Sister Ruth Catherine who started a successful food shelter in West Philadelphia.
The mural's colors are also beautiful.
"It's a health center and I just felt that health centers need some life and they need some brightness," said muralist Shira Walinsky.
Esther, who visits the health center, says it's very inspiring. "It shows me the strength and all of the shoulders I'm standing on as a woman," Esther said.
Bryn Mawr College partnered with the Mural Arts Program and located the mural in West Philadelphia because of its ties to the community.
