New Tolls On Pa. Turnpike Expected To Make Your Commute Easier

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The new year will bring big changes to the way the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission collects tolls.
The Turnpike Commission will be rolling out a cashless tolling system come January 4.
Westbound EZ Pass holders won't notice anything new aside from a five dollar flat-fee.
Non EZPass customers will be charged $6.75, but Turnpike CEO Mark Compton says they won't have to stop or even slow down thanks to a new feature known as Toll By Plate.
"How it works is the customers come under a gantry system. There are two sets of gantries and at those gantries, there are cameras. So the cameras will take a picture of the license plate," Compton explained.
Bills will be mailed to the registered owners of the vehicles.
The Delaware River toll booth will be taken down and moved about five miles west to the new Neshaminy Falls interchange, creating a buffer zone that will include, by 2018, a connection to I-95.
