Organic Plot And Biotech Baddies Found In Thriller By Philly Author Who Gets "Bee" For Effort

By John Ostapkovich

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia novelist is out with his second thriller following a detective's pursuit of answers in the confusing new world of food.

Jon McGoran introduced us to battered Philadelphia police detective Doyle Carrick in Drift, a whodunnit and what's-been-done set in rural Pennsylvania through genetically modified organisms. Now, the former communications director for the Weaver's Way organic food coop plucks another environmental chord for its suspense factor, vanishing bees..

"I almost immediately had the idea for Drift, which was the first book in the series. The more I researched Drift, the more other ideas I realized, wow, this was something that could really continue. There are a lot of other things to explore in there."

Now, in Deadout, a term for a beehive emptied by the mysterious Colony Collapse Disorder, McGoran sends his protagonist, troubled Philadelphia police detective Doyle Carrick, to Martha's Vineyard, where he's immediately plunked in the middle of a power struggle over disappearing bees and the corporation with super bees ready to move in, along with shady characters with ulterior motives and, of course, guns.

There is a launch party on August 6: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/deadout-launch-event-tickets-12109771653
