New Test To Detect Alzheimer's Developed By Scientists In New Jersey
CAMDEN (CBS) - Scientists in New Jersey say they've come up with an accurate and simple new test for Alzheimer's Disease.
Around the world, researchers have been working to develop a blood test that can confirm the presence of Alzheimer's. Now, scientists at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey say they have developed a test that is more than 90 percent accurate.
Robert Nagele says his team will soon seek Food and Drug Administration approval for the test, which he says he hopes will also be used for early diagnosis in the years to come.
"It's always better and your chance of success is always greater if you treat a disease at the very earliest stage of the disease and you stop the devastation at that point before it progresses too far."
Nagele says the test can also diagnose Parkinson's Disease but reminds that it is not yet publicly available.
Researchers say the tests work by spotting specific antibodies to either Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. Over time, the same method of testing could lead to early testing for other diseases, perhaps even cancer.
