New Technology Paves Way For Film Screenings At Perelman Theater

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A trip to the movies has changed dramatically over the years. Drive-ins and narrow
indoor screens have given way to technology that virtually puts you in the film. On Tuesday, officials at the Kimmel Center unveiled their brand new digital installation in the Perelman Theater which they hope will be the venue chosen by corporations and filmmakers alike to screen their productions.
The theater is unlike any other you have ever been in, the project years in the making and the screen 19 feet five by 36 feet wide. Its technology can play from a variety of sources.
"This is a place for our entire community," said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center. "So no matter what your interest is in, whether it is film or live performing arts, this is your home."
But will it be used for movie premieres?
"We are looking forward to having our first movie premiere next Monday," said Greater Philadelphia Film Office Executive Director Sharon Pinkenson. "It will be an invitation only event, a premiere of Philadelphia Filmmaker Lee Daniels' 'The Butler'"
Ewers and Pinkeson want everyone to know that non-profit groups, corporate entities, anyone can rent this theater for a screening, and they eventually want to work with the City's film students, as well.
