New Smartphone Plan Promises Service For Under $20 A Month

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Last week, we told you about a budget-priced smartphone plan that's coming to market (see story) but it was unclear just how much they would charge for the device. Well, now we know.

The plan offered by Republic Wireless costs $19 a month, which the provider says will get you unlimited voice minutes, texting and data with no strings.

Without a contract to tie you and your wallet down, it was thought the device would cost a lot more than you could get at Verizon or AT&T, for example, under a two-year deal.

However, this Android smartphone is $99 ($199 when the promotion runs out).

The plan's savings come from Republic's reliance on WiFi for talk and data and Sprint's network when an internet signal is not available. It remains to be seen, however, how seamlessly the phone will switch between the two.

You can get the promotional price until Nov. 27 at republicwireless.com by entering the code welcome19.
